A Message From Jackie: Why This Week’s Vaccine Victory Belongs to Texas Parents
For years, parents like me were told to sit down, stop asking questions and trust the experts. We were called anti-science, irresponsible, and even dangerous. Mothers who watched their children suffer after vaccination were dismissed. Parents who asked whether every shot, at every age, for every child was necessary were treated like a threat to public health.
I know because I was one of them. My daughter Ashlyn was hurt by a vaccine nobody warned me could hurt her. I will never forget what it feels like to realize that something you agreed to because you believed you were protecting your child may have harmed her instead. That changed the course of my life. It is why I have spent more than a decade fighting for Texas parents to have the information, the freedom and the authority to make these decisions for their own children.
This week, something happened that I honestly wondered if I would ever live to see. The President of the United States said the childhood vaccine schedule needed to change.
On Monday, President Trump signed an executive order cutting the number of vaccines universally recommended for children, calling for the MMR shot to be split into three separate doses, and moving more vaccine decisions to shared judgment between parents and doctors. The order also reaffirms parental authority and exemptions. Think about that. The federal government is finally acknowledging what Texas parents have been saying for years. More is not automatically better. Questions are not dangerous. Parents deserve a meaningful say.
Today I want to say something to every mom who was mocked, dismissed or made to feel stupid for asking questions: You were not crazy. You were early. This victory belongs to the parents who refused to shut up. The moms who sat in legislative hearings until midnight. The parents who read package inserts when everyone told them not to worry. The families who were bullied by schools, doctors, bureaucrats and institutions but kept asking questions anyway.
President Trump did not just make a technical change to a government document this week. His administration acknowledged what we have been saying all along. That matters enormously to me. Because somewhere tonight there is a mom holding a baby who has not yet had to learn the lessons so many of us learned the hard way. She may get to ask questions without being mocked. She may have choices I never knew I had.
That is why we fought. And we are not finished. But today, we won. Parents called the shots. And Washington finally listened.
